About
  • Many who come to the Shell Factory Flea Market in North Fort Myers are searching for deals on household goods, health and beauty items. Or they are looking for great values on clothing and jewelry.
Others are looking to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, or even local honey. Still some are looking for good deals on hardware and tools. There are also a few who come to take advantage of the on-site bicycle repair service. And a few more who are looking for collectibles, such as books, records and coins.

No matter what the reason for a trip to the Shell Factory Flea Market is, all who come can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the grounds, and a chance to partake in what often amounts to a social event.

Although the flea market is busier during season, it is open all year and so many local visitors make it an early morning ritual to meet up with friends or shoot the breeze with the vendors as they shop for their finds.

Kathy Elliott, of Kathy’s Corner, is one such vendor who enjoys talking to the flea market visitors as much as she enjoys making them happy with an item they love. Kathy sells jewelry and women’s tops.

Vendor Larry Goldman also enjoys chatting with visitors who show up at the flea market. Goldman sells fishing equipment, knives, tasers and a variety of household items.

Donny Jones offers fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as local honey, orange blossom, wild and country blossom. Jones is always happy to help visitors with their selections.

Terry Caldwell sells an array of colloidal silver jewelry that he says kills 650 harmful bacteria. He also enjoys the variety of guests who stop by the flea market, whether they are regular local or seasonal visitors.

“Many visitors also come for an early morning walk as a form of exercise,” said Jerry Johnson, the flea market’s manager. Johnson explained that visitors often shop and stroll through the grounds, and then later grab a breakfast or lunch at the food truck, with under-the-canopy seating. “Some wind up staying for lunch at the on-premise, Capt’n Fishbones Seafood Grill,” added Johnson.

Those who like to walk their pets are also in luck. “Leashed pets are also welcome at the Flea Market,” said Johnson, who said that pets are also welcome at the outdoor patio seating at Capt’n Fishbones.

Families who come to the flea market often stay longer and enjoy the on-site Fun Park that opens at 11 a.m. and offers bumper boats, paddle boats, miniature golf and water wars. They also enjoy the 2.5-acre Nature Park that opens at 10 a.m. and includes a chance to see a variety of animals and birds, as well as the Dinosaur Park, the children’s playground and the outdoor butterfly garden.

“We get a lot of families that first come to the flea market and then wind up making a day of it,” said Johnson, who has worked as the flea market’s manager for the past three years and oversees the daily operations.
